witchcraft, yes. when you say "these spells" what exactly are you talking about? most things you see on TV aren't possible. none of us will be throwing fire from our hands or calling down lightening from the sky. people expect the effects of witchcraft to be overt, having immediate and explosive reactions, but in all honesty most of it is subtle and goes unnoticed.
I'm generally an atheist but I have a theory..
A long time ago humans had access to magic, but it got so abused so the "high council" (as I call it) took it away and all memory of it, but they forgot about certain scrolls, tablets and therefore we still believe in it. Allthough when they took away our magic, they granted us more motivation to advance technological and that is why technology basically stopped in the dark ages, yet now is advancing at a very high rate. So do I believe in it? No, but this is one of my theories about it.
I believe that the source of what appears to be witchcraft and spells are just the powers of demons that have been lent to individuals, or witches and wizards. I don't think they have anything to do with the special supernatural skills of any one human person. Just demons at work, which is what a lot of people think, and some people don't even let their kids read Harry Potter because of that. I'm not saying I didn't read it.. I loved that series x_x
All this stuff about "white magic" I believe to be nonexistent. I don't believe that all demons are bad, because demons are just other-wordily beings with powers different than ours (in my opinion), but I don't think that magic should be used ever because it really screws things up for lots of people.
maybe the ancient spells really worked...but modern witchcraft spells are crap...i tried some spells from the witchcraft book i read...and nothing worked
Witchcraft and spells are a way of explaining how we can manipulate energy in our favor. It is an inexact pro to-"science" for want of a better word. We manipulate the energy we refer to as magic through the exercise of will power. Some people are better at this than others, which is why it is more difficult to quantify the results for the scientifically minded.
"These" spells? Which spells are you referring to? Oh well, it doesn't really matter. No, magic and spells do not exist. How do we know? Because they have never been demonstrated to exist. Never. Not once, in over 10,000 years of recorded history. No magic, no spells, no supernatural effects or beings of any kind whatsoever. None, Nada, zippy. Let's all get used to it, folks.
That would depend on what you believe Witchcraft and spells consist of.

ETA: @Thorzhek - I like your theory, however I would like to maybe make a small adjustment...perhaps instead of completely wiping the memory of EVERYONE using magical abilities, they only reserved a select few to maintain those abilities, and perhaps teach the basics to those seeking, rather than teaching the actual acts, so they may develop their own abilities should this "council" feel they have warranted those abilities. I only say this because the use of magic and ability does continue to exist today, just not within each and every person who decide either not to learn about it, or dismiss it altogether.

Yes, Magick, sorcery, spells, witchcraft, etc., are all powers of the mind. The success of any working depends upon the strength and power of the operator's mind, aura, mental concentration and his/her ability to sense and direct energy. Understanding energy, discerning between different energies, invoking, evoking, and directing energy is the foundation of all "magi ck." This comes through POWER MEDITATION. How diligently and consistently one applies ones self to a program of power meditation will determine how powerful ones workings are.
