Atheists please help me with philosophy. (Zoroastrianism)?
Zoroaster wrote hymns to God. He was the first monotheist. His texts mention an afterlife which is eternal hell or eternal heaven depending on the good deeds one has done in one life. If one weighs more than the other, then they are sent to either place accordingly. Well, i have been a hydrophobic (afraid of hell) for around 6 months now.
I had to read his texts carefully.
Conclusions i can make.
Ahura Mazda(god) is most powerful, omniscient and all good.
Souls judge themselves by their consciousness after death to either places.
Man has free will
Zoroaster was a radical philosopher in the sense that he was the first to come up with concept of one god, free will and an afterlife which depended on morals.
To me, that's pretty amazing
So when i read his text, he ASKS questions to God.
Who makes the stars and sun travel in their paths?
Who prevents the heavens from shattering(stars from falling to earth)?
Who makes the moon wax/wane?
Those three statements CLEARLY indicate that he knew earth was flat and no knowledge of astronomy. IF God was omniscient, he could have told him and not leave those questions unanswered.
How do they solve problem of evil?
Apparently evil is caused by humans.
Natural Evil is caused by the laws of nature.
I cant think of any more ways to disprove him.
I am so sorry if i passed this fear on someone else. Literally my life is HELL because i fear it so much.
If i did in fact scare you, please email me and we can debunk it together.
"Who makes the stars and sun travel in their paths?
Who prevents the heavens from shattering(stars from falling to earth)?
Who makes the moon wax/wane?"
Well, he wasn't the *first* monotheist, or even the first one we know about. That's Akhenaten.
Hell is imaginary. I don't know what else to tell you, you seem to realize that consciously, but you're still holding onto an irrational phobia (I know that's redundant).
Zoroastrianism is not philosophy. Philosophy involves logical, rational argumentation, not just making shit up. Zoroastrianism is a religious theory, not a philosophy. (This is a pet peeve of mine).
"How do they solve problem of evil?" The problem of evil applies to any god that claims to be all-knowing, all powerful, and all good. An all knowing god that purposefully sets in motion that which causes evil and allows evil to go on unstopped is not being good. Seriously, a good being would have stopped the holocaust and saved the Jews. The thing is that the bad things that happen to people are caused by the actions other people, not by themselves (for the most part). Free will does not solve the problem of evil. How is it not evil to allow the rape of a child simply because her rapist chose to rape? Only if people's actions did not affect others would this notion be at all convincing.
Also, there is no more evidence for Zoroaster's theories than any other form of theology, and, like every other person claiming divine connection, he got a lot of obvious stuff wrong. Also, the dates and origins of these works are highly disputed, making it quite possible that Hebrews were already around (Jewish people). There are contradictory historical issues in different versions of the Zoroaster story (social structures that didn't coexist, claims that the prophet had been born later than some other sects were founded based on his writings). The astronomy you cite uses common Alexanderian era Greek notions (the dome of the sky) and not unique to the Zoroastrians of the period.
I used to be afraid, that I would scare others too, by some of my writings. Once you learn, that you can NOT believe everything you read and hear, the fear will subside. Everyone needs to learn this and they will suffer until they do. Even the Bible says, be aware of false Prophets, that means to QUESTION everything you hear or read. How does anyone know anything and how could God expect you to believe someone who says," Hey, God said this" when anyone can say, "God said this". Nothing wrong with reading and learning from others, but I would think, God would want us, to check this out, with our OWN understanding. If it doesn't ring true, from WITHIN, then WHY DOESN'T IT? Then who is the liar? Them or ourselves? especially, when the Bible says, the Kingdom of God is within you.
First of all, if you live a righteous life then you should have no reason to fear hell.
Secondly, you should not take the words you read in the Gathas so literally as the translations we have are not 100% accurate. Gathic Avestan is a very archaic language and linguists have had a hard time translating these ancient hymns.
"Who prevents the heavens from shattering(stars from falling to earth)?"
Here Zarathushtra is asking who holds the very fabric of physical reality together, nothing in these Gathic verses suggest the earth is filth. In fact there were many ancient Greeks and Persians who believed the earth was round, such as Aristarchus of Samos, an ancient Greek man who lived in the 3rd century that proposed the earth traveled around the sun, which we now know today is true
Thirdly the Zoroastrian hell is not an eternal hell, in the end of time evil will be destroyed and all the evil souls in hell will be cleansed and forgiven; after passing through an excruciating (metaphysical) river of liquid metal.
