Are the still followers of the religion of Zoroastrianism?
I know it was common in the Persian Empire back when it was still around, but did belief in it disappear after the Persian Empire was conquered by Alexander the Great? Or after the area was conquered by the Roman Empire a few centuries later?
Yes, particularly in Iran, however they are not treated well under the semi-theocratic regime that has ruled since 1979. Sky burial is a particular clash.
I think this brings up a good point. That religious people do not particularly choose their religion, but rather have it chosen for them.
An example would be a christian person in America, would most likely not be a christian if they were not born here. What if the same person were born in Iran? Would they be christian now? No.
Yes, there are still followers of Zoroastrianism. One of my girlfriends is from India, her family is Zoroastrian. Small Zoroastrian communities exist all over the world. I believe they are mainly in Western India, Central Iran and Southern Pakistan. There are also Zoroastrian communities in western countries such as England, Canada and Australia.
Yes, there are Zoroastrians around, I am one. My ancestors left Iran for India some 1100 years ago when things became too difficult to remain there. They sailed to the very hospitable shores of western India and con secreted their first sacred fire at a place called Sanjan (Persian hangman-place of meeting -Zoroastrian Persians from different regions of Persia somehow met up here) Sanjan is some 150 kl ms north of Mumbai. The sacred fire still burns to this day. Akbar the Mogul emperor, some 450 years back, was quick to recognize these people (who were farmers by now in western India) are from ancient Persia and he held their High Priest in great regard. From then on , through the British raj and to the present day Parsis are in the forefront in modernising India, pioneered India's first- cotton mills-steel -hydroelectric power-locomotives-cars-tea estates-hotels....those who saw the terrorist attack on mumbai on TV and saw the Taj mahal hotel up in flames, this hotel is owned by Tatas a parsi family who also pioneered all the things listed above.the Tatas are worth some 60/70 billion dollars but not listed in Forbes because their industrial empire comprise some 50 corporations and are owned by various Tata charities and scholarships! The present Ratan Tata is on the company payroll, not particularly wealthy, just a salaried Chairman with no ownership. Ratan Tata has pioneered a new people's car called Nano for just $3000 so the middle class of India can afford a car!
